Sciatica is pain that travels from your lower back or buttock down the leg, caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. If that sounds like you, our chiropractors and physiotherapists treat it under one roof at our clinic in neighbouring Isleworth, for people across Brentford and West London.
You don’t have to put up with it and hope it passes. Same day or next day appointments are often available, and we open six days a week, including evenings and weekends. We are rated 5.0 from 100 reviews and trusted by more than 1,000 patients.
Sciatica is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg, and when something irritates it, you feel it along that whole path.
Most people describe a sharp or burning pain from the lower back into the leg, sometimes with numbness or tingling in the buttock, leg or foot. It often gets worse with long periods of sitting, coughing or sneezing, and in some cases there is weakness in the leg or trouble standing and walking.
That leg pain is what separates sciatica from ordinary back pain, which tends to stay in the back. Common causes include a herniated or bulging disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy related changes and injury to the lower spine.
You don’t need to know which one applies to you before you book. Working that out is the point of the first appointment. Our page on sciatica covers the condition in more detail.
Good sciatica care combines hands on treatment with exercise and clear advice on what to do between visits. According to NICE guideline NG59, manual therapy such as spinal manipulation, mobilisation or massage can be considered for low back pain and sciatica, but only as part of a package that also includes exercise.
That is how we work. Depending on what your assessment shows, your plan may include:
Each follow up session is 15 to 30 minutes with one practitioner giving you their full attention. Between visits, our custom PhysiTrack app lets you message your practitioner, follow your exercises and track progress, so the work carries on at home.
Many clinics offer one or the other. We offer both, so your treatment isn’t limited by what a single profession happens to do.
Khalil Hussein, our clinic director, is dual qualified as a physiotherapist and chiropractor and specialises in chronic pain and injury rehabilitation. Malaika Hussain is a chiropractor with a focus on women’s health. Our practitioners are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
If your sciatica needs joint work, soft tissue work, rehab exercise or a mix of all three, you get it in one place, from people who talk to each other.
If you work in an office around Brentford’s Golden Mile, or from a spare room at home, you may know the pattern. Hours of unbroken sitting, a stiff stand up, then pain creeping into the buttock and down the leg by the end of the week. Sitting is one of the things that commonly makes sciatica worse.
Treatment usually mixes hands on work to settle the sore areas with exercises and small practical changes to your day, so your back and leg cope better with sitting.
Training can bring sciatica on too. A heavy lift or a long run followed by pain down the leg needs a plan for getting you back to your sport, not just rest. Our page on sports and overuse injuries explains how we approach that.
Pregnancy related changes can bring on sciatica, and we are specialists in pregnancy and postpartum care, combining chiropractic care with rehab exercise. It helps to mention you’re pregnant when you book so we can plan your visit around you.
Your first visit is a 60 minute initial consultation. Here is how it runs:
We treat you on day one if you’re happy to, so you leave knowing what is wrong and what happens next. Later visits are shorter and focused on progress, so you’re never sitting through the same assessment twice.
Most sciatica improves with the right care, though it can be very painful at first. Some symptoms need urgent medical care rather than a clinic appointment.
The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E if you have back or leg pain with changes in bladder or bowel control, loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, numbness, tingling or burning in both legs or feet, or new weakness in the legs or feet. It advises an urgent GP appointment or a call to NHS 111 if you feel hot, shivery or generally unwell, or if severe pain starts suddenly or gets worse quickly.
If any of that sounds like you, don’t wait for an appointment with us.
Brentford and Isleworth are neighbouring parts of the London Borough of Hounslow. Our clinic is at 14B St John’s Road, Isleworth, London TW7 6NN, and you can get directions from your postcode or call us on +44 20 3137 7198.
We are open six days a week, with evening and weekend appointments for people who can’t get away during the day. We also accept insurance, so ask the team about your provider when you book. You can read what patients say on our patient reviews page. If your pain is mainly in the back without the leg symptoms, see our back pain treatment in Brentford page.
Q. Should I see a chiropractor or a physiotherapist for sciatica?
Either can help, and the best choice depends on what is causing yours. We have both at the clinic, so your assessment decides the approach rather than the title on the door. Many people end up with a mix of hands on treatment and exercise.
Q. How long does sciatica last?
NHS advice is that sciatica usually gets better in 4 to 6 weeks but can last longer. At your first appointment you’ll get an estimated recovery time based on your own assessment, and we adjust the plan as you respond.
Q. Do I need a GP referral for sciatica treatment?
In most cases you can book directly with us online or by phone, with no referral first. If you plan to claim on private medical insurance, check your provider’s requirements beforehand, as some have their own rules.
Q. Will treatment hurt?
We explain what we plan to do before we do it, and treatment is adapted to what your assessment shows. Some people notice mild soreness for a day or so after hands on work, which usually settles. If anything worries you during a session, tell us and we’ll change course.
Q. Can you treat sciatica during pregnancy?
Yes. We care for pregnancy and postpartum pain, combining chiropractic care with rehab exercise. Malaika Hussain has a particular focus on women’s health.
