Sciatica Treatment in Whitton

Sciatica Treatment in Whitton

Pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and runs down the leg is the classic sign of sciatica, caused by an irritated sciatic nerve. Our chiropractors and physiotherapists treat it together at our clinic in Isleworth, for people across Whitton and West London.

You don’t have to put up with it. Same day or next day appointments are often available, and we open six days a week, including evenings and weekends. We are rated 5.0 from 100 reviews and trusted by more than 1,000 patients.

Understanding Sciatic Nerve Pain

The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. Sciatica is what you feel when something compresses or irritates it, so it is a symptom rather than a diagnosis in itself.

Pain is often sharp, shooting or burning. Numbness or tingling in the buttock, leg or foot is common, and some people notice weakness in the leg. Prolonged sitting, coughing and sneezing tend to make it worse, and standing or walking can get difficult.

Unlike general back pain, which stays mostly in the back, sciatica travels down the leg. Possible causes include a herniated or bulging disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy related changes and injury to the lower spine. Our sciatica page has more detail.

Sciatica Treatment Near Whitton: Our Plan

According to NICE guideline NG59, manual therapy such as spinal manipulation, mobilisation or massage should only be offered for low back pain and sciatica as part of a package that includes exercise. We work to that standard, so hands on care always comes with exercise.

Your plan may include chiropractic adjustments to reduce pressure on the nerve and restore movement, and physiotherapy to stretch, strengthen and mobilise. It can also include nerve gliding, plus guidance on posture and on pacing your activity so you stay moving safely.

Follow up sessions are 15 to 30 minutes, one practitioner giving you their full attention. Our custom PhysiTrack app lets you message your practitioner, follow your exercises and track progress between visits.

Chiropractor and Physiotherapist, Same Clinic

You don’t need to guess which profession you need before you walk in. We have both, and your assessment decides how the two are combined.

Khalil Hussein, our clinic director, is dual qualified as a physiotherapist and chiropractor and specialises in chronic pain and injury rehabilitation. Malaika Hussain is a chiropractor with a focus on women’s health. Our practitioners are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

What Makes Sciatica Worse, and What to Do About It

Sitting for long periods is one of the things that tends to aggravate sciatica, and so are coughing and sneezing. Beyond that, triggers differ from person to person, which is why we look at how you move and what your days involve.

Part of treatment is helping you work out what to change, with guidance on posture and ergonomics at work, at home and during activities. If a lift or a run set it off, we plan your return to training instead of just telling you to rest.

Sciatica in Pregnancy

Pregnancy related changes can bring on sciatica. We specialise in pregnancy and postpartum care, combining chiropractic care with rehab exercise. Tell us you are pregnant when you book, so we can plan your appointment.

Your First Appointment

You start with a 60 minute initial consultation.

  1. A full body functional assessment of how you move, including posture, joint function and muscle balance.
  2. A plain English explanation of what we find, with time for questions.
  3. A clear diagnosis, an estimated recovery time and the treatment options.
  4. Hands on treatment in the same session, if you are ready.
  5. A plan for between visits, with your exercises set up in PhysiTrack.

We treat you on day one, so you leave with a plan and not just a name for the problem. Later visits are shorter and about progress.

How Long Does Sciatica Last?

NHS advice is that sciatica usually gets better in 4 to 6 weeks, though it can last longer. Some people recover faster and some need more time, depending on the cause and how long it has been going on.

We don’t give a session count before we have examined you. At your first appointment you will receive an estimated recovery time, and we adjust the plan as you respond.

When Sciatica Needs Urgent Medical Care

Most sciatica is painful but not dangerous. A few symptoms need urgent medical attention rather than a clinic appointment.

The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E if you have back or leg pain with changes in bladder or bowel control, loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, numbness, tingling or burning in both legs or feet, or new weakness in the legs or feet. It advises an urgent GP appointment or a call to NHS 111 if you feel hot, shivery or generally unwell, or if severe pain starts suddenly or gets worse quickly.

If any of that sounds like you, don’t wait to see us.

Sciatica Treatment FAQs

Q. Can a chiropractor help with sciatica?
Yes, and it is one of the conditions we see most often. Chiropractic care aims to ease pressure on the irritated nerve, and we combine it with physiotherapy exercise so the improvement lasts.

Q. Should I see a chiropractor or a physiotherapist?
Either can help, and your assessment decides the approach. With both in the clinic, many people receive hands on treatment alongside exercise.

Q. Do I need a GP referral?
In most cases you can book directly, online or by phone. If you plan to claim on private medical insurance, check your provider’s requirements first, as some have their own rules.

Q. Will treatment hurt?
We explain what we plan to do before we do it, and adapt treatment to your assessment. Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so after hands on work, which usually settles. If anything worries you during a session, tell us and we will change course.

Q. Can you treat sciatica during pregnancy?
Yes. We care for pregnancy and postpartum pain, combining chiropractic care with rehab exercise. Malaika Hussain has a particular focus on women’s health.
