Sciatica Treatment in Twickenham

Sciatica Treatment in Twickenham

Sciatica is pain along the sciatic nerve, usually felt as a sharp or burning line from the lower back or buttock down the leg. At our Isleworth clinic, a chiropractor and physiotherapist work together to treat it, for people across Twickenham and West London.

You don’t have to wait for it to pass. Same day or next day appointments are often available, and we open six days a week, including evenings and weekends. We are rated 5.0 from 100 reviews and trusted by more than 1,000 patients.

What Sciatica Does to Your Day

Sciatica runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg, and when the nerve is irritated you feel it all along that path. The pain is often sharp, shooting or burning.

Many people also get numbness or tingling in the buttock, leg or foot, and some notice weakness in the leg. Sitting for a long time, coughing and sneezing tend to make it worse, and standing or walking can become difficult.

The leg pain is the clue that separates it from general back pain, which usually stays in the back. Sciatica is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, and the cause is what we look for first. It can come from a herniated or bulging disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy related changes or an injury to the lower spine. Our sciatica page covers these in more depth.

Sciatica Treatment Near Twickenham: How We Work

According to NICE guideline NG59, manual therapy such as spinal manipulation, mobilisation or massage should only be offered for low back pain and sciatica as part of a package that includes exercise. That is how our care is built. Hands on treatment calms things down, and exercise makes the change stick.

Your plan may include chiropractic adjustments to reduce pressure on the nerve and restore movement, physiotherapy to stretch, strengthen and mobilise, and nerve gliding. We also guide you on posture and on pacing your activity so you can keep moving safely.

Follow up sessions are 15 to 30 minutes, one patient with one practitioner. Between visits, our custom PhysiTrack app lets you message your practitioner, follow your exercises and track progress.

A Chiropractor and a Physiotherapist, Together

It helps when the people treating your sciatica can compare notes. We have both professions in the same clinic, so you are not sent elsewhere when your plan needs a different skill.

Khalil Hussein, our clinic director, is dual qualified as a physiotherapist and chiropractor and specialises in chronic pain and injury rehabilitation. Malaika Hussain is a chiropractor with a focus on women’s health. Our practitioners are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Should You Wait for Sciatica to Settle?

Sometimes mild sciatica does ease by itself. NHS advice is that it usually gets better in 4 to 6 weeks, but it can last longer.

The trouble with waiting is what happens in the meantime. If the pain disturbs your sleep, makes sitting hard or keeps you from your usual routine, a few weeks is a long time. Early assessment tells you what is behind it and what to do about it, and it gives you a plan instead of guesswork.

Sciatica in Pregnancy and After Birth

Pregnancy related changes can bring on sciatica. We specialise in pregnancy and postpartum care, combining chiropractic care with rehab exercise. When you book, mention you are pregnant so we can plan your appointment around you.

Your First Sciatica Appointment

The first visit is a 60 minute initial consultation, and it goes like this:

  1. A full body functional assessment of how you move, including posture, joint function and muscle balance.
  2. A plain English explanation of what we find, with time for your questions.
  3. A clear diagnosis, an estimated recovery time and the treatment options open to you.
  4. Hands on treatment in the same session, if you are ready.
  5. Your exercises set up in PhysiTrack for between visits.

We treat you on day one, so you don’t leave with only a diagnosis. Later appointments are shorter and about progress, with no repeat of the full assessment.

Symptoms That Mean Go to A&E

Sciatica is usually painful but not an emergency. A few symptoms are different, and they need urgent medical care, not a clinic appointment.

The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E if you have back or leg pain with changes in bladder or bowel control, loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, numbness, tingling or burning in both legs or feet, or new weakness in the legs or feet. It advises an urgent GP appointment or a call to NHS 111 if you feel hot, shivery or generally unwell, or if severe pain starts suddenly or gets worse quickly.

If that sounds like you, please don’t wait to see us.

Sciatica Treatment FAQs

Q. Can a chiropractor help with sciatica?
Yes, and it is one of the conditions we see most often. Chiropractic care aims to reduce pressure on the irritated nerve, and we combine it with physiotherapy exercise so the improvement lasts.

Q. Is a physiotherapist or a chiropractor better for sciatica?
Neither is better in every case. Your assessment decides the approach, and with both professions in one clinic many people receive a mix of hands on treatment and exercise.

Q. How long does sciatica last?
NHS advice is that it usually improves in 4 to 6 weeks, though it can last longer. You will get an estimated recovery time for your own case at your first appointment.

Q. Do I need a referral from my GP?
Usually not. You can book directly online or by phone. If you plan to claim on private medical insurance, check your provider’s requirements first, as some have their own rules.

Q. Will the treatment be painful?
We explain what we are going to do before we do it, and we adapt treatment to what your assessment shows. Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so after hands on work, which usually settles. If anything worries you during a session, tell us and we will change course.
