If your back or buttock pain keeps travelling down the leg, sciatica is the likely cause. It happens when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed. Our chiropractors and physiotherapists treat it together at our Isleworth clinic, for people across St Margarets and West London.
You don’t have to wait and hope. Same day or next day appointments are often available, and we open six days a week, including evenings and weekends. We are rated 5.0 from 100 reviews and trusted by more than 1,000 patients.
The difference is in where it hurts. General back pain tends to stay in the back. Sciatica follows the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg, often below the knee.
The pain is commonly sharp, shooting or burning, sometimes with numbness or tingling in the buttock, leg or foot. Some people notice weakness in the leg. It often worsens with long periods of sitting, coughing or sneezing, and standing or walking can become hard.
Sciatica is a symptom, so we look for the cause. A herniated or bulging disc is one. Others are spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy related changes and injury to the lower spine. Our sciatica page covers them in more detail.
NICE guideline NG59 says manual therapy, such as spinal manipulation, mobilisation or massage, should only be offered for low back pain and sciatica as part of a package that includes exercise. That is the model we follow, so treatment is never just a few adjustments.
Depending on your assessment, your plan may include chiropractic adjustments to reduce pressure on the nerve and restore movement, physiotherapy to stretch, strengthen and mobilise, and nerve gliding. We also advise on posture and on pacing activity, so you keep moving without flaring things up.
Follow up sessions run 15 to 30 minutes with one practitioner focused on you. Our custom PhysiTrack app lets you message your practitioner, follow your exercises and track progress at home.
Our clinic has both a chiropractor and a physiotherapist, so your treatment isn’t limited to what one profession offers. If your plan needs to shift from joint work towards rehab, it can, without you starting again elsewhere.
Khalil Hussein, our clinic director, is dual qualified as a physiotherapist and chiropractor and specialises in chronic pain and injury rehabilitation. Malaika Hussain is a chiropractor with a focus on women’s health. Our practitioners are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Mild sciatica sometimes settles by itself, and NHS advice is that it usually improves in 4 to 6 weeks, though it can last longer. But if it is disrupting your sleep, your work or your routine, a month and a half is a long time to wait.
Being assessed early tells you what is behind it and what to avoid, and it means treatment can begin while the pain is still recent. If you have already had it for weeks, you can still start now.
Pregnancy related changes can bring on sciatica. We specialise in pregnancy and postpartum care, combining chiropractic care with rehab exercise. When you book, let us know you are pregnant so we can plan your visit.
The first visit is a 60 minute initial consultation.
We treat you on day one if you are happy to, so you leave knowing what is wrong and what happens next. Later visits are shorter and focus on progress.
Most sciatica is painful but not dangerous. Certain symptoms need urgent medical care, not a clinic appointment.
The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E if you have back or leg pain with changes in bladder or bowel control, loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, numbness, tingling or burning in both legs or feet, or new weakness in the legs or feet. It advises an urgent GP appointment or a call to NHS 111 if you feel hot, shivery or generally unwell, or if severe pain starts suddenly or gets worse quickly.
If any of that applies to you, don’t wait for us.
Our clinic is at 14B St John’s Road, Isleworth, London TW7 6NN. You can get directions from your postcode or call +44 20 3137 7198.
We open six days a week with evening and weekend appointments, and we accept insurance. Ask the team about your provider when you book. You can see what patients say on our patient reviews page, or browse our other services across St Margarets.
Q. Can a chiropractor treat sciatica?
Yes, and it is one of the conditions we see most often. Chiropractic care aims to ease pressure on the irritated nerve, and we pair it with physiotherapy exercise to help the improvement last.
Q. Is a chiropractor or a physiotherapist better for sciatica?
Neither is better for everyone. Your assessment decides the approach, and with both in our clinic, many people receive hands on treatment alongside exercise.
Q. How long will my sciatica take to improve?
NHS advice is that it usually improves in 4 to 6 weeks but can last longer. At your first appointment you will get an estimated recovery time for your own case.
Q. Do I need a GP referral?
In most cases you can book directly, online or by phone. If you plan to claim on private medical insurance, check your provider’s requirements first, as some have their own rules.
Q. Will treatment hurt?
We explain what we plan to do before we do it, and adapt treatment to your assessment. Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so after hands on work, which usually settles. If anything worries you during a session, tell us and we will change course.
