If pain runs from your lower back or buttock down your leg, you are likely dealing with sciatica, which is irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. We treat it at our Isleworth clinic with a chiropractor and physiotherapist working together, for people across Ealing and West London.
Same day or next day appointments are often available. We open six days a week, including evenings and weekends, so you can be seen without waiting weeks. We are rated 5.0 from 100 reviews and trusted by more than 1,000 patients.
The easiest way to tell is where the pain goes. Ordinary back pain tends to stay in the back. Sciatica travels, running along the sciatic nerve from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down the leg, often below the knee.
People describe it as sharp, shooting or burning. You may also notice numbness or tingling in the buttock, leg or foot, and sometimes weakness in the leg. Sitting for long stretches, coughing and sneezing often make it worse, and walking or standing can become hard work.
Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis, so the real question is what is irritating the nerve. A herniated or bulging disc is a common cause. Others include spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy related changes and injury to the lower spine. Our sciatica page goes through each in more detail.
The NICE guideline on low back pain and sciatica (NG59) recommends exercise, and says manual therapy such as manipulation, mobilisation or massage should only be offered as part of a package that includes exercise. We built our care around that idea. You won’t get a few adjustments and a goodbye, and you won’t get a photocopied exercise sheet either.
Depending on what your assessment finds, your plan may include chiropractic adjustments to ease pressure on the nerve and restore spinal movement, physiotherapy to stretch, strengthen and mobilise, and nerve gliding exercises. We also give practical advice on posture and on pacing your movement so you stay active safely.
Follow up sessions run 15 to 30 minutes with one patient and one practitioner, no rushed handovers. Our custom PhysiTrack app lets you message your practitioner, follow your exercises and track progress between visits.
Sciatica often needs more than one kind of care. Joint work may help the spine move properly, while rehab exercise keeps the nerve settled and the problem from returning. At our clinic you get both without being passed between practices.
Khalil Hussein, our clinic director, is dual qualified as a physiotherapist and chiropractor and specialises in chronic pain and injury rehabilitation. Malaika Hussain is a chiropractor with a focus on women’s health. Our practitioners are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Sciatica can settle by itself, and NHS advice is that it usually improves within 4 to 6 weeks, though it can last longer. Waiting it out is a gamble if the pain is stopping you from working, driving or sleeping.
Getting it looked at early means you know what is causing it, you know what to avoid, and you can start treatment while the pain is still fresh. If you have already been struggling for weeks, it is not too late to start.
Pregnancy related changes can bring on sciatica. We specialise in pregnancy and postpartum care, combining chiropractic care with rehab exercise. Let us know you are pregnant when you book, so we can plan your appointment around you.
Your first appointment is a 60 minute initial consultation.
We treat you on day one, so you leave with answers and a plan rather than another wait. Later visits are shorter and focused on progress, so you never repeat the full assessment.
Most sciatica is painful but not dangerous. A few symptoms, however, need urgent medical care and not a clinic visit.
The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E if you have back or leg pain with changes in bladder or bowel control, loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, numbness, tingling or burning in both legs or feet, or new weakness in the legs or feet. It advises an urgent GP appointment or a call to NHS 111 if you feel hot, shivery or generally unwell, or if severe pain starts suddenly or gets worse quickly.
If any of that applies, please don’t wait to see us.
We are at 14B St John’s Road, Isleworth, London TW7 6NN. You can get directions from your postcode or call +44 20 3137 7198.
We are open six days a week with evening and weekend slots for people who can’t get away in the day, and we accept insurance. Ask the team about your provider when you book. See what patients say on our patient reviews page, or browse our other services across Ealing.
Q. Can a chiropractor treat sciatica?
Yes, and it is one of the conditions we see most often. Chiropractic care aims to ease pressure on the irritated nerve, and we pair it with physiotherapy exercises so the benefit lasts.
Q. Should I see a chiropractor or a physiotherapist for sciatica?
Either can help, and your assessment decides which approach suits you. Since we have both at the clinic, many people end up with a mix of hands on treatment and exercise.
Q. How long does sciatica take to go away?
NHS advice is that it usually improves in 4 to 6 weeks but can last longer. At your first appointment you will get an estimated recovery time for your own case.
Q. Do I need a GP referral?
In most cases you can book directly with us, online or by phone. If you plan to claim on private medical insurance, check your provider’s requirements first, as some have their own rules.
Q. Will treatment hurt?
We explain what we plan to do before we do it, and adapt treatment to your assessment. Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so after hands on work, which usually settles. If anything worries you during a session, tell us and we will change course.
