Sciatica Treatment in Chiswick

Sciatica Treatment in Chiswick

Sciatica usually shows up as pain running from the lower back or buttock down the leg, caused by an irritated sciatic nerve. We treat it with a chiropractor and physiotherapist working together at our Isleworth clinic, for people across Chiswick and West London.

If it has been bothering you, there is no need to sit it out. Same day or next day appointments are often available, and we open six days a week, including evenings and weekends. We are rated 5.0 from 100 reviews and trusted by more than 1,000 patients.

How Sciatica Typically Feels

The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. When it is compressed or irritated, you can feel it anywhere along that path.

Typical signs are sharp or burning pain from the lower back into the leg, numbness or tingling in the buttock, leg or foot, and sometimes weakness in the leg. Sitting for long periods, coughing and sneezing often make it worse, and it can be hard to stand or walk comfortably.

That travelling leg pain is what distinguishes sciatica from ordinary back pain. The cause varies from person to person. It can be a herniated or bulging disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, piriformis syndrome, pregnancy related changes or an injury to the lower spine. Our sciatica page goes into each one.

Sciatica Treatment Near Chiswick: How We Approach It

NICE guideline NG59 states that manual therapy, such as spinal manipulation, mobilisation or massage, should only be offered for low back pain and sciatica as part of a package that includes exercise. Our care reflects that, so you will always get hands on treatment and exercise together.

Depending on your assessment, your plan may include chiropractic adjustments to reduce pressure on the nerve and restore movement, physiotherapy to stretch, strengthen and mobilise, and nerve gliding. We will also advise you on posture and on pacing your activity so you can stay moving safely.

Follow up sessions are 15 to 30 minutes, one patient with one practitioner. Between visits, our custom PhysiTrack app lets you message your practitioner, follow your exercises and track your progress.

One Clinic, Two Professions

You shouldn’t have to choose between a chiropractor and a physiotherapist before you know what is wrong. In our clinic you see both professions, and your assessment decides the mix.

Khalil Hussein, our clinic director, is dual qualified as a physiotherapist and chiropractor and specialises in chronic pain and injury rehabilitation. Malaika Hussain is a chiropractor with a focus on women’s health. Our practitioners are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Sciatica From Sitting, Training and Everyday Strain

Sciatica often has a trigger. Sitting for long stretches tends to aggravate it, so a desk job, a long drive or a sofa evening can all contribute. Training can do it too, and a flare up after lifting or running needs a plan for getting you back to your sport, not just rest.

We cover both sides. Posture and ergonomic guidance helps with the sitting, and our approach to sports and overuse injuries helps with the training. The goal is that you know what set it off and what to change.

Sciatica in Pregnancy

Pregnancy related changes can bring on sciatica. We specialise in pregnancy and postpartum care, combining chiropractic care with rehab exercise. It helps to tell us you are pregnant when you book, so we can plan your appointment.

What Your First Visit Involves

Your first appointment is a 60 minute initial consultation.

  1. A full body functional assessment of how you move, including posture, joint function and muscle balance.
  2. A plain English explanation of what we find, with time for questions.
  3. A clear diagnosis, an estimated recovery time and the treatment options.
  4. Hands on treatment in the same session, if you are happy to.
  5. Your exercises set up in PhysiTrack for between visits.

We treat you on day one, so you leave with more than a diagnosis. Later visits are shorter and focused on how you are progressing.

How Long Sciatica Can Take

NHS advice is that sciatica usually gets better in 4 to 6 weeks but can last longer. How long yours takes depends on the cause, how long you have had it and what you need to get back to doing.

We won’t quote a number of sessions before examining you. After your first appointment you will have an estimated recovery time and your options, and we adjust as you respond.

When Sciatica Needs Urgent Medical Attention

Most sciatica is painful but not dangerous. Some symptoms call for urgent care, not a clinic appointment.

The NHS advises calling 999 or going to A&E if you have back or leg pain with changes in bladder or bowel control, loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, numbness, tingling or burning in both legs or feet, or new weakness in the legs or feet. It advises an urgent GP appointment or a call to NHS 111 if you feel hot, shivery or generally unwell, or if severe pain starts suddenly or gets worse quickly.

If any of that applies, please don’t wait for us.

Sciatica Treatment FAQs

Q. Can a chiropractor treat sciatica?
Yes, and it is one of the conditions we see most often. Chiropractic care aims to reduce pressure on the irritated nerve, and we pair it with physiotherapy exercise so the improvement lasts.

Q. Should I see a chiropractor or a physiotherapist for sciatica?
Either can help, and your assessment decides the approach. With both in the clinic, many people receive hands on treatment alongside exercise.

Q. Do I need a GP referral?
In most cases you can book directly, online or by phone. If you plan to claim on private medical insurance, check your provider’s requirements first, as some have their own rules.

Q. Will treatment hurt?
We explain what we plan to do before we do it, and adapt treatment to your assessment. Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so after hands on work, which usually settles. If anything worries you during a session, tell us and we will change course.

Q. Can you treat sciatica during pregnancy?
Yes. We care for pregnancy and postpartum pain, combining chiropractic care with rehab exercise. Malaika Hussain has a particular focus on women’s health.
